READ: 1 Tim. 5:9-16
Do not let a widow under sixty years old be taken into the number … well reported for good works … I desire that the younger widows marry … If any believing man or woman has widows, let them relieve them, and do not let the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are really widows.
Older widows who have shown good works such as Christian upbringing of their children, hospitality towards strangers, or helpfulness within the community of believers, qualify to be put on a list. They must have been faithful in their marriages. In short, they must be trustworthy for work among church members, where confidentiality and sincere dedication are required.
Likely, this involves services within the church, such as assisting and providing spiritual advice to younger women regarding household matters and child-rearing. Perhaps it also includes visiting the sick and other assistance in families. Especially, they can offer help and advice to other sisters in the Lord.
These older experienced widows, who have the time and opportunity, may have a significant role in building up the community of believers. However, it requires their full and heartfelt dedication.
Therefore, Paul warns against involving younger widows in such tasks (verses 11-15). They are preoccupied with other things, like seeking a husband. There is nothing wrong with that; in fact, Paul advises them to marry instead of committing to assistance services. This way, they will not find themselves in a situation where they break their commitment to serve Christ, making them guilty.
There is another reason: Paul wants to avoid situations where some younger widows, being idle and gossipers, become more of a problem than a solution. Slander and gossip could arise from such scenarios.
