READ: 1 Tim. 5:17-22: Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine …’The laborer is worthy of his wages … Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear … that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality. Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure.
Paul is now addressing church leaders again, particularly focusing on Timothy’s conduct. Timothy should be aware that the congregation does not automatically speak positively about church leaders. They are often an easy target for criticism and gossip, even though those who provide good leadership deserve double honor. The congregation should be taught to express appreciation for them! After all, they are doing their work on behalf of Christ and for the benefit of the church. This should also be reflected in providing them with sufficient income to sustain themselves. Paul cites Old Testament texts in support of this.
In this regard, the Lord Jesus wants to see good order and justice, as well as appreciation and fairness. Timothy should also handle misconduct in a fair manner. There should be no room for injustice, unfairness, false accusations, prejudices, favoritism, or public sins. This could involve church leaders, Timothy himself, or other brothers and sisters. Of course, this is different when accusations are well-founded.
In cases of public sins, they must be addressed openly, as it will also serve as a deterrent. It is essential that genuine peace reigns in God’s house and that all discord and public sins are rejected.
Timothy should also be mindful of his own behavior. He, too, can be influenced by others, by prejudices, and by impurity. This is how one should conduct oneself in the house of God.
