READ: 1 Tim. 6:3-10: If anyone teaches otherwise … he is proud … from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions … From such withdraw yourself. Now godliness with contentment is great gain … But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare … which drown men in destruction and perdition.
In this chapter, we read several warnings, exhortations, and encouragements. There are members who have false teachings causing misery of disputes, envy, quarrels, slander, and malicious suspicions. They often cling to their beliefs even when they are proven wrong. Their teachings do not align with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the doctrine that accords with godliness.
This can be related to both doctrine and conduct. Such individuals exhibit deceitful and cunning behavior, even causing divisions within the church. It is the devil’s work, a violation of the ninth commandment.
Who are these people seeking personal gain in the name of godliness (v.5)? They are those who pretend to be believers but are actually seeking personal fame and recognition from their followers. Paul says they have a corrupt mind and are deprived of the truth. Timothy should turn away from such people (see also Tit. 3:9-11).
In contrast to the behavior of these corrupt church members, Paul emphasizes true devotion to God. It is genuinely a source of great gain: it brings peace with God and peace with one’s brothers and sisters. You are content and rich with what God gives you, even if you face difficulties and endure slander. This is because you know that you have received God’s salvation, that God works all things for your good, and that nothing can separate you from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Rom. 8:28-39).
